How to effectively use different Fuzzy Matching Algorithms?

Have you ever tried to match data in two tables? Isn’t it too difficult to match values in tables without identical data like the names with spelling mistakes or extra space between two words?

Analytics team faces the biggest problem when they get the task of normalizing two sets of similar data with varied variables. They need to do this in order to create a common record for modeling. Most of the times, the reason behind errors in tables is the manual entry of values. For instance, the forms filled by users or the spreadsheets maintained by the employees have highest chances of incorrect data. Small organizations with limited data might not understand the problem well, but large scale businesses with humongous data know how painful it is to match or merge multiple tables.

Now the big question here how to solve this problem?

So, the solution to this problem is Fuzzy Matching. It is a technique used in computer-assisted translation for record linking. The technique works on less than 100% matches to while searching for agreements between different segments of text and entries in tables of previous translations. It is designed to reliably match two words which are similar but not exactly similar.

Below given table is the example of two data sets, which are same but not exactly similar.

Data Set 1 Data Set 2
Organization Name Sales Organization Name Number of Customers
EasyMorphInc $300 Sally Harper Cntr 10
Dominoz Pizza $400 EasyMoprhInc 50
Sally Harper Center $500 Domino’s Pizza 100

Types of Fuzzy Matching Algorithms

To ensure that businesses working in different domains get maximum benefit from the process of matching or merging data through this software, different algorithms have been provided in the open source libraries. One can get the perfect results by using right and the most suitable fuzzy matching algorithm, only when they are aware of varied options. Given below is the list of algorithms for data matching:

Soundex

This is a phonetic algorithm, which indexes names by recognizing them through sound according to English language pronunciation. This helps in matching names despite minor spelling differences by assuring same representation of homophones through encoding.

n-gram

It is an immediate sequence of n items for a selected sequence of text or speech. Based on the application, the items in the text or speech can be phonemes, letters, words, syllables or base pairs. This is a probabilistic language model to anticipate the next item in a sequence in the form of an (n-1)- order Markov model.

Levenshtein distance Algorithm

Levenshtein distance measures the difference between two sequences through a string metric. In simple terms, Levenshtein distance between two words is the minimum number of single-character edits such as substitutions, deletions, and insertions used by the software to change one word into the other word.

BK-tree

This is a metric tree used to distinct metric spaces. BK-tree was suggested by Walter Austin Burkhard and Robert M. Keller.

Bitmap algorithm with modifications

This is an approximate string matching algorithm, which tells about the existence of a substring which is “approximately equal” to a given pattern. In this algorithm, approximate equality is defined as Levenshtein distance. As per Levenshtein distance, the algorithm considers a substring and pattern equal if they are within a given distance k of each other.

Damerau–Levenshtein distance

It is a string metric distance between finite sequences of symbols, given by calculating the minimum number of operations the software needs to perform to transform one string into the other string. In this algorithm, the operation performed to convert string is defined as a deletion, insertion or substitution of a single character. It also includes a replacement of two contiguous characters.

Tips to use fuzzy matching effectively for the best results

Limit matching records: Comparing the entire database with itself can make the process more difficult and time consuming. To get final data with least errors, limit the number of records recovered for comparison. To limit your data, you can exclude deceased entries like non-person entities. It will prevent the tool from checking unnecessary data or the data modified in a past 2-3 days.

Work with short strings: Fuzzy matching gives the best results when done with short strings. Sit and think of the things you really want to match on like addresses, customer names, email ids etc. to limit the comparison. Further, in address also you can limit the comparison by selecting a particular option like the Street Line 1 instead of matching of the complete address.

Use simple match queries: Focus on simple match queries like ID; rather than queries of your choice. Undoubtedly, removing date of birth and address from the matching data list makes a lot of sense as it helps the users in deciding if a certain match is true duplicate or not. While doing this, make sure you keep that part of the query separate from the match itself. Putting the match in a WITH clause is an easy and effective way to get the perfect results.

String matching, near matching or fuzzy matching, with whatever name you call it, the fact that it is very helpful for the businesses remains same. Apart from matching strings, the technology also helps the businesses reduce marketing postage cost by removing duplicate records from the database. It also ensures that the data is updated with zero errors, which also boosts company’s reputation in the market. Customers feel happy when their names are spelled correctly and they receive only one version of the promotional campaigns. Use the tips given in the article and get most out of the technology to make your marketing campaigns and business operations more profitable.

Where Android App Development is Going in 2017

The year 2016 brought along some interesting trends in the android applications. And, it looks like 2017 is well on its way towards continuing those trends while introducing new ones. Although change and new technology can be intimidating, the reality is if you resist change–you can be assured your competitors are embracing it. This is why you should embrace changes brought on with android applications–they are often exist to user demand.

Since we are making our way through this new year, it is time to try something new. 2017 will be a benchmark for how android applications impact not just individual users, but even small businesses throughout the globe. Android developers are pushing the envelope on a daily basis in order to improve the smartphone and tablet experience. So many new Android apps come out daily, it’s difficult to keep track of them all. Here are some of the hottest trends in Android app development for 2017.

It’s all about Location-based services (LBS)

You’ll see LBS or geofencing advance greatly in 2017. This is what lets businesses know when customers are close in order to send them special offers tailored specifically to their interests. Geofencing is establishing a virtual fence around a predefined geographic area. In essence, it goes a few steps further from push notifications. It’s all about timely and relevant mobile messaging.

Users can read about offers or announcements when they’re in the area and able to act on them. Plus, there’s no real limit on location. To illustrate, coffee shops can trigger geofencing when users are in the same city and need a cup of Joe to kickstart their day. A party planner might set up geofencing around party stores and bakeries. The possibilities are broad. As a result, 2017 will see a marked increase in the use of geofencing as a customer retention tool.

Augmented and Virtual reality

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) hit the mainstream in 2016. It was only a few months ago when Pokémon Go created mass hysteria. It gave everyone the ability to witness the power of reality apps. Expect to see the number of AR and VR Android apps on the rise.

It’s expected to transform the way we interact with software systems and with each other. AR and VR will no longer be considered gimmicky. They will also be combined with Utility Apps to add a new dimension of functionality to a device. This powerful combination can help boost customer engagement while attracting millennials and Generation Z.

An even better user experience (UX)

Often, the main focus of mobile app development is user experience. In 2017, you will see Android apps that enhance the user experience in a more practical and innovative way. People have a tendency to quit any app that is too difficult to use. In 2017, many Android apps will pay more attention to the user’s point of view.

The Internet-of-Things (IoT)

The IoT industry is in a boom phase right now. Android apps which cater to IoT will get to ride that wave. Companies in industries such as auto, health, education, security and smart homes will start integrating IoT advancements into Android apps. Everything is becoming smart and integrated into the Web such as homes, TVs, appliances, cars, health devices and more.

Android instant apps

These let you reach customers even if they don’t have an app installed on their device. All they have to do is open a webpage and access the code needed by the app at that moment. Android instant apps can run instantly with just a few taps on the screen. It is essentially a cloud-based version of the app. Today, there are around 2.2 million Android apps available for download. Android Instant Apps saves the user both time and effort.

According to Gartner, mobile downloads will generate an income of $77 billion in 2017. You can expect a lot of that to come from the new and improved Android apps.

Looking for Good Android UX Design?

Undeniably, Android devices are dominating the smartphone market mainly because of the lower price-points especially when compared to the high-end iPhones. With the explosion of Android devices worldwide, you would think that it’s time for mobile app designers to take Android seriously.

In fact, we all know that Android has not been the essence of great design – the approval system for the Google Play Store is compassionately resulting in numerous applications that lack even a bit of UX design.

With the launch of Material Design, it’s been clear that Android has established that it is not about to be discharged into the gulf of bad design. Overall, Material Design is completely effective yet meaningful.

Despite Android’s complete attention on a greater design, there is a lack of resources to become a good android app designer. We can say that the knowledge bank is expanding day-by-day. To make things easy yet effective, we have shared four most important things to keep in mind when it comes to good Android UX design.

Three Highly Imperative Things to Know About Android UX Design

Adaptive

We have already mentioned that one catch of Android apps that is fragmentation. There is no doubt that designers are opting for iOS platform. As you know that designing for different screen sizes and resolutions is a cumbersome task that no one wants to deal with.

But do you know that such challenges only need innovative thinking from designers that eventually lead to better Android UX design? However, the design strategy, which fits this potential problem is Adaptive Android Design. As you know that the adaptive method is not completely new.

All those, who are from a web design background, already familiar with responsive design frameworks. If you have grown through Google Design guidelines, adaptive UI is well-explained and detailed. The main thing behind Adaptive Android Design is to billet to as different screen sizes as possible.

At the time of designing applications, it is imperative to start with smaller screen sizes. Many a time, designing for larger screens becomes secondary and an application ends-up looking somewhat absurd on a tablet. Scaling up is one such factor that should be considered throughout the whole designing process.

However, if the application is content rich, optimizing screen usage is a quite difficult task. You should consider how to adapt the layout in such way that it still makes sense to the user. Yes, it is true that there will be more work for designers; however, to make sure an optimal user experience for Android users, it is necessary.

Splash Screens

The Android community has been in the huge discussion since Google has introduced splash screens in their applications. Most of the feedback has been rather negative, so it must be understanding why this is so.

A splash screen is a combination of an image, which takes up the whole screen space and is obtainable while the app is loading. What is appearing is a logo or other branding information about the application.
Rather than leaving the user staring at a blank screen at the time of app loading, a splash screen develops the impression that the application is loading faster. Moreover, it is also helpful in bringing across the brand image.

Making use of splash screens pleads the question – is it good Android UX design? There are lots of android communities that have discussed on it stating that if the application is taking a long time to load, the problem is the app itself. A good Android UX design looks for fast and impressive performance and delivery of the app’s UI to the user.

Moreover, if the application’s UI design fails to effectively convey the brand image without making use of the non-functional screen, the app’s design has failed.  When it comes to difficult applications and slow internet connections, it is true that having users stare at a blank screen while the app loads is not deal.

However, it is possible to show the app’s UI as the data loads into it so that the user gets familiar with the UI; therefore, delivering consistency for a good UX design.

FAB

FAB stands for Floating Action Button that was introduced with Material Design. FABs are fully louder, attention-grabbing circulator buttons, which are typically located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

However, typical FABs are given bold as well as shadows. As Google said that they can use for “a promoted action”, and they show the one action users perform on daily bases.

Moreover, FABs are widely used in Android applications that went Material.

Is FAB good for Android apps? Various arguments have taken place, and those arguing against FABs are claiming that they are much in the way and distracting for the user.

Decided the size and fixed position can deliver as an obstacle for touch points, which just happen to sit on it. Whether you are considering FAB is a right or not, the important thing is to comprehend the users and think through the average user flow that is important for good Android UX design. You should be clear like Does the application need a FAB?

Is the action imperative to justify having a FAB? All these are very important questions that should be answered with insights derived from users. However, if you have made the decision to go with FABs, make sure to follow Google Design guidelines and execute them accordingly. Otherwise, inaccurate FAB will destroy the UX of your application.

So, these are the three things that mobile app designers should consider for good UX android design. If you are looking for a high-end android app design service, you can hire a leading android app development company that has an experienced team of android developers to comprehends your requirements and deliver an outstanding quality solution.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 : Rumors, Specs, Features, Release and More

After launching a dull Galaxy S5, renowned smartphone maker Samsung stepped back into the global arena with its powerful and classiest Galaxy S6. The 2015 flagship from the company was a complete masterpiece in the high-end segment. It came at a decent price tag, and proved a whole lot better than overrated iPhone 6 and HTC M9. But, the story doesn’t ends here. In the last quarter of every year, Samsung’s flagship is followed by a power-packed Note phablet. Last year, it was Note 4 for us, and this year, it’s likely to be Note 5.

Samsung hasn’t highlighted anything about the launch or even the existence of a new Note smartphone. The company has made all possible efforts to stay quiet about its next product launch. But since the premium Note series has been such a massive success, the possibility of not launching Galaxy Note 5 is quiet less. There has also been a buzz about upgraded design language and additional features, but before anything gets officially confirmed, let’s take a look on the curated round-up of what might be coming with the next masterpiece from Samsung.

Design

The design language of Galaxy Note 5 is likely to be better than its predecessor. Just like Galaxy S6, the bigger phablet is also expected to feature a metal and glass finish. Few weeks before, Phone Arena published some renders revealing the look of Note 5 created by taking Galaxy S6 as inspiration. These renders showed how Note 5 can look if it follows the same design language of Galaxy S6.

But, since nothing is confirmed, most of us are expecting Samsung to take Aluminum as the primary material for Note 5. The curved body of the phone will give a great feel in hand, and will look extremely alluring from all angles. Along with brilliant design language, Note 5 will also feature the S Pen stylus just like other Note devices.

Display

According to rumors, the company is currently working on a Super AMOLED 4K Ultra HD display for its Galaxy Note 5. It’s expected to be unveiled in the month of August, and would perfectly fit with the launch cycle of Samsung’s next device. The recent update from Phone Arena claimed that the newly Note 5 will come with a beautiful resolution of 3850 X 2160, featuring a pixel density of 746ppi.

Long time before, Samsung claimed that it will launch QHD devices in 2014 and UHD handsets in 2015. It kept its word last year, and will probably do the same this year by launching a beautiful 4K display with the successor of Galaxy Note 4. Speculations are moving in thin air, but the official confirmation about display is still awaited from Samsung.

Hardware

On the hardware front, Galaxy Note 5 is expected to deliver improved performance with an upgraded Exynos chipset. Samsung will probably equip this device with the same 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 chipset from Galaxy S6 or an upgraded 7422 chip, using the 14 nanometer production process. The processor powering Galaxy S6 looks like a perfect fit for Note 5. It’s runs insanely fast, doesn’t heats up, and is a decent battery saver too.

In terms of RAM, SamMobile recently confirmed that the new Note device will pack 4GB of memory for offering buttery smooth with no lags or glitches. It will be a complete power-house for core-android users.

Software

Just like hardware, the software of Galaxy Note 5 might also be upgraded to a whole new level. The alleged Note Phablet is expected to run Android 5.1.1 out-of-the box with the improved avatar of TouchWiz interface. Camera capabilities

On the camera front, Galaxy Note 5 is expected to be better than ever with its improved 18-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. Last year, Note 4 featured excellent camera capabilities with its 16-megapixel shooter complimented with optical image stabilization and many new features. It produced excellent images under low-light and daylight conditions, was one of the best camera devices last year. Note 5 will be much different, but considering the image production of Galaxy S6, it will definitely produce extremely crisp and vibrant images.

Storage

As of now, there is no word on storage, but most probably Samsung will launch Note 5 in three storage variants featuring 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of inbuilt memory. The expandability of memory will be up to 128 gigs, and users will get full support for keeping a massive app and media collection just as per their needs.

Battery

The battery of Galaxy Note 5 will be bigger than its predecessor. According to the recent update from Phone Arena, Galaxy Note 5 is speculated to feature a big battery of 4100mAh. Rumors about a 3900mAh battery are also in the air, but either way, the improved chipset installed on this device will be playing a major part in optimizing power-usage in an adequate way. The battery of Galaxy S6 was expected to fall in 6-7 hours, but thanks to the Exynos 7420 chip, the phone did well for the entire day. If Galaxy Note 5 comes with the same or upgraded avatar of this chipset, battery performance will not be a matter of concern!

Release Date and Price

Being a major highlight of Samsung’s high-end arena, Galaxy Note 5 will be priced fairly above 50k. However, the existence of this phone is still unknown, and last quarter of the year is still a few months away. So, if Galaxy Note 5 really exists, it will be coming anywhere around September or October. IFA, the consumer electronics trade show is scheduled for September, and can be an ideal host for the launch of next Note from Samsung.
